Zomergem- Bezeten zijn ze of liever 'besmuft'. Net zoals Gargamel ze hartstochtelijk haat, kunnen de zusjes Veronique en Michelle Leyseele maar niet genoeg krijgen van smurfen. Op 8 november richten ze daarom een ruilbeurs in voor alles wat met de blauwe dwergjes te maken heeft.

Beiden hebben ongeveer een even grote verzameling aan blauwe mannetjes, maar geen van hen kan er een getal op plakken. Drie jaar geleden ondernam Michelle een poging om haar verzameling te smurfen ... euh te tellen. Al een eind voor het laatste rek gaf ze het tellen op, en bleef te teller staan op 4.100 poppetjes. Geen enkele is dezelfde: slechte namaak uit Polen, handgeschilderde uit China met andere kleuren dan de Europese, witte ongeschilderde ... je kan het niet gek genoeg besmurfen. Vorig jaar alleen al werden er minstens 700 bijgesmuft. Dan smurfen we nog niet over de DVD's die je vorig jaar bij een populaire krant kon smurfen of de postzegels die de postuitgaf en uiteraard de prentjes die bij Delhaize werden gesmurft. Vorig jaar bestonden de smurfen immers 50 jaar, en beleven de zussen hét jaar van hun leven. Michelle: 'Toen mijn vriend vroeg waar we op reis zouden gaan, heb ik hem geantwoord: 'Zoetje, het wordt een duur smurfenjaar.'

Veronique, inmiddels 40, begon pas met verzamelen toen ze 20 was. 'Wellicht uit nostalgie. Want vroeger speelden wij veel met smurfen. Michelle heeft zelfs kindertekeningen teruggevonden waarop ze smurfendorpen tekende.' En net als de smurfen beleven de zusjes ook doldwaze avonturen. 'Toen je een paar jaar geleden smurfenpopjes kreeg bij bepaalde producten in het Nederlandse warenhuis Albert Hein, zijn we daar bijna wekelijks gaan smurfen. De ene keer kreeg je dat bij drie pakken spaghetti en toen hebben we een gans rek spaghetti in onze kar geladen. Of die keer dat je het bij toiletpapier kreeg. Toen hebben we ons ma meegenomen om de derde kar te duwen', gieren de zussen het uit. 'Het strafste is dat je die poppetjes nu kunt kopen voor 20 cent. Maar die suspense naar Nederland te rijden en dan het plezier achteraf, dat maakt het allemaal zoveel meer waard.' Zo waren enkele jaren geleden in Frankrijk de prentjes die vorig jaar bij Delhaize te verkrijgen waren, al te smurf. 'We reden toen geregeld naar daar om de zakjes stickers te kopen, niet per zakje maar meteen per box.' Haar duurste exemplaren bewaart Michelle in een kast voorzien van ruw glas om eventuele dieven ofte 'Gargamels en Azraëls' een pijnlijke hand te bezorgen. 'Bloeden zullen ze!', zegt ze met een grijns. 'En als ik die kast wil herinrichten, zegt mijn vriend altijd: 'Ik zal de pleisters maar al klaar leggen.'

Op de verzamelbeurs verwachten ze bezoekers van overal in Europa, want vorig jaar, tijdens de eerste editie van de beurs, toonden zich al verzamelaars present uit Nederland, Frankrijk, Engeland, Duitsland, Italië en zelfs Finland.

Bacause of this on November 8, 2009 they are organising a fair for everything that has to do with the blue gnomes. Both have about an equally big collection of blue creatures, but neither of them can put a figure on it. Three years ago Michelle did attempt to smurf, ...uh, count her collection. Long before reaching the last item, she gave up counting and the counter got stuck at 4,100 smurfs. No two are the same: bad fakes from Poland, handpainted from China with other colours than the Europeans', white unpainted ... as crazy and smurfy as you can think of. Last year alone at least 700 were smurfed. And then we don't even smurf about the DVDs which you could get at a popular newspaper last year or the postage stamps issued by Belgian Post and of-course the images smurfed at Delhaize (Belgian supermarket). Last year the Smurfs were 50 years old and the sister had thé year of their lives. Michelle: 'When my boyfriend asked were we would travel to, I replied: 'Sweetie, it is gonna be an expensive smurf year.'

Veronique, now 40, only began collecting when she was 20. 'Probably for nostalgic reasons. In old times we played a lot with Smurfs. Michelle even rediscovered childhood drawings in which she had drawn complete smurfy villages.' And just like the Smurfs the sisters also have their crazy adventures. 'When last year you could get smurf figures with certain products in the Dutch supermarket Albert Hein we went smurfing there almost every week. Once you could get extra smurfs with three packets of spaghetti and than we loaded a full shelf of spaghetti into our trolley. Or the time you could get them with toiletpaper. We brought our mum to push the third trolley.' the sisters burst out laughing. 'The worst part now is that these figures can be bought for 20 cents. But that suspense of driving to the Netherlands and then the fun afterwards makes it all worth so much more.' A few years ago in France the pictures from last year's Delhaize promotion were already available to be smurfed. 'We drove in that period on a regular basis there to buy the sachets with stickers, not just the sachets but the box.' Michelle keeps her most expensive items in a cabinet with roughened glass to give the thieves or the 'Gargamels and Azraëls' a painful hand. 'They will bleed!', she says with a grin. 'And whenever I want to reorganise that cabinet, my boyfriend always says: 'Let me put the plaster on already for you.'

At the fair they expect customers from all over Europe because last year, during the first fair, there were collectors from the Netherlands, France, Great Britain, Germany, Italy and even Finland.
